In the Women’s Finals, Serena Williams defeated Maria Sharapova – 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. This was the 3rd final featuring the top 2 WTA players, and Williams 6th Sony Open win!

In the Men’s Finals, Andy Murray beat out David Ferrer – 2-6, 6-4, 7-6. This was Murray’s 2nd Miami win and pushes him to number 2 in the ATP rankings!

Indoor Sports Surfaces

Gymnasiums have to cater to a wide array of sports and are often used as multi-purpose activity areas. Indoor sports surfaces have to be durable enough to keep up with the athletes no matter what they are doing. Basketball, badminton, volleyball, and handball all may share the same court, which could be used multiple times a day for hours at a time. Regardless of whatever is played in a court, as a facilities manager, you want to ensure that you are buying a product that will last. If the space you are working with is already built, assess how the space is used and whether the equipment already in place (bleachers, stages, etc.) will bear any limitations on reflooring or recoating. For structures still in construction, there is more flexibility for choosing the appropriate coating.

Outdoor Sports Surfaces

An even greater diversity of sports are played outdoors, including field hockey, racing/running, baseball, football, archery, horseback riding, kayaking, rock climbing, and a countless number of other activities. Outdoor sports surfaces are just as diverse as the activities played on them. While some sports are set directly within the elements, as in hiking up mountains, wind surfing on the sea, skiing cross-country over the snow, and so on, other sports need a special court or flooring system to play on.

All outdoor surfaces are designed to either perform in or withstand all types of weather. Even if you don’t want to walk out into the snow for a brisk game of tennis, your court will be there ready to go when the weather clears up in spring. Surfaces also must provide both traction and shock absorbency so that players can perform well.

There are three main types of outdoor recreational surfaces: tracks, turf, and courts. Artificial tracks and the infill for synthetic turf often contain recycled materials, such as small cubes from rubber shoe soles or car tires. Reusing these materials helps to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills. This material also provides good traction and cushioning for athletes as well as adequate drainage in the event of rain. The look and feel of the turf is designed to resemble and behave like natural grass without the hassle of watering, mowing, fertilizing, and replanting. Outdoor courts for basketball and tennis are made of a acrylic, which provides a finer surface than that of tracks, but still provides reliable traction as well as a firm surface so that the balls have a better bounce that won’t interfere with game play.

Qualideck was successful in being specified for the Rotary Center parking deck in Evanston, IL and installed by our partner, Allied Waterproofing.  A Carl Walker specification assured Rotary Center that they were getting a traffic coating that would stand the test of time and look beautiful for years to come.  The 30,000 SF parking deck for rooftop parking was comprised of our primer (#152), membrane (#252), intermediate coat (#372) and our aliphatic UV resistant topcoat (#512).  Black was chosen to give the deck a striking appearance in contrast to the parking lane markings.  “Rotary Center as well as Cushman and Wakefield are extremely pleased with the end result.  During the final walk through there were no issues reported at all with respect to Qualideck which is a rare occurrence” according to Bill Leonhard, President, Allied Waterproofing.

Durability

One of the biggest issues aircraft owners complain of is the durability of their facilities. Airplanes, their maintenance equipment, and spills from chemicals all create a harsh environment. In order for the concrete floor to last as long as possible, it should have a special coating over it to preserve its foundation. Any coating that is applied needs a diamond-hard surface to withstand the pounding and abrasion it will routinely receive from the thousands of tons of equipment being rolled and dragged over it.

Chemical Resistance

Aviation and jet fuels can cause severe damage to any environment they are in the event of a spill. Any coating that is on a hangar floor must not only be chemically nonreactive, it must also resist breaking down itself in case of contact or exposure with any harsh or volatile chemicals spilled onto it. Chemical resistance is more than a durability issue, it is a safety issue for everyone working within the hangar.

Even Application

A hangar floor coating’s ability to settle evenly after application is vital to the life of the flooring. A surface that isn’t perfectly level creates points of weakness at every rise and dip. When strain accumulates in these areas, it can produce cracking, allowing more cracks to feather out and dirt and chemicals to become trapped inside it. After cracking, the floor will need to be recoated and the cracks will have to be repaired to curb further damage. Uneven surfaces also create problems for workers moving heavy equipment across the hangar floor as objects will catch in places and slide unexpectedly in others.

Reflectivity

For hangar owners interested in a sleek appearance, a hard reflective surface coating can be applied to give the hangar floor the glossy finish of a professional showroom. This kind of surfacing can also be helpful in hangars with relatively dim lighting. The enhanced ability to catch and reflect light may help workers and mechanics see more clearly.
